Wow!  This is bizarre and, actually, not common in Missouri. A single mother of five was sentenced to two days in jail for her 13 year old son’s truancy from public school.  According to the news report, he missed nearly half of the 2007-2008 school year.   After he was expelled for truancy, the mom was then ‘homeschooling’ him; but, apparently that is also in question, according to the Prosecutors.

In a shocking decision, the Judge ordered the boy back into school - and specifically ordered that he not be homeschooled, but placed back into public school.  Even Jim Morris, from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, found the ruling against homeschooling to be unusual.  Morris said, “That is a rare step,” noting that neither his office nor many school districts regulate home schooling. “The state has always had a hands-off policy.”

This is definitely a case to watch; because Missouri has always been very homeschool friendly.  Even though this isn’t primarily a case about homeschooling, it did come into play and is worth watching to see how it all unfolds in the appeal process.

More drama resulting from California’s recent decision on homeschooling.  That mess is far from over, apparently.  Read the full story

What are your thoughts:

  • Should parents be required to have a teaching certificate/degree?
  • Do you think if California courts uphold their recent ruling that parents should not have the choice to homeschool, that this could cause a ripple effect and other states will follow that lead?

Let me know what you think.

With the change in my husband’s work schedule back to 2nd shift/7 days per week; we quickly realized that he did not see the children at all on their school days, when attending the private school. This was four days out of the week (they had a four-day school week) they didn’t get to see their daddy at all. This was not acceptable for our family, so it was not difficult for us to make the decision to homeschool.

Even though these three children still here at home have never been ‘officially’ homeschooled, as they began their schooling in the private school - this is actually a return to homeschooling for our family. I pulled my now 22 year old daughter out of public school after her 5th grade year and homeschooled her from 6th grade through to graduation. So homeschooling is not new to me, but it’s a big exciting adventure for these littles as they’ve never done it officially.

This time around, because I will have three children to school (grades: 1 and 3) I am using a unit study approach to teach them all at once. I intend to begin their studies in July, as that’s the beginning of the recordkeeping year for Missouri (July 1 - June 30 is the recordkeeping year here). So any work we do over the summer, will count towards school. Also, since with the unit study, we’ll be doing field trips and crafts and other equally fun (and educational) things - this will keep the children from getting bored.

Our Curriculum Choices for 2008/2009 School Year

The above will provide a very well-rounded curriculum for the children and I think will better suit their learning styles too.
