The Call
At 4:50 am this morning my phone rang, and that usually never means good news. Mark had worked a 12 hour shift and got off work at 4:30 am and I was expecting him home around 5:30 am. My dogs woke me at 4:15 am, so I was awake when the phone rang. I saw from the caller ID that it was Mark, which was highly unusual that he would call at that hour, even though I am often awake, he usually does not call. As soon as I answered, I knew something was wrong.
He tells me he’s been in a car accident, and he’s fine. No one else was hurt, but it looks like the Jeep is totaled. I’m thankful he’s okay, other than shaken up. So I wake the children, we all get dressed and drive the 45 minutes to go pick him up.
What Happened
He had just left work and had not gone far down highway 44 when he saw a 3 car accident on the right side of the road. So he took his Jeep out of cruise control, and slowed down his speed and just as soon as he did, he hit a patch of ‘black ice’ and spun out and hit the concrete median at 55 miles per hour! He was wearing his seat belt and the air bag deployed. He was fine, but the Jeep is not. Cars can be replaced – people can’t!
God’s Protection
Mark got out of the car immediately after the accident to assess the damage. Being somewhat still in shock and looking around. He was standing between his Jeep and the concrete median along the side of the highway. Mark says that suddenly he knew he needed to move the Jeep quickly off the road over to the side. So he did so; and only 3 minutes later – in the exact same spot where his car hit – a truck spun out and hit the median. Had Mark not moved his car, he would have been pinned between the car and the median – no doubt killed. Angels were protecting him!
He’s Fine
Other than being sore, Mark is fine. We won’t know until at least Monday the extent of the damage on the Jeep. It doesn’t really matter, we have insurance, and gap insurance to cover the balance should they total it. Either way, we’re fine. I’m so thankful my husband is safe!
Life is Precious
A reminder to never let a loved one leave the house without telling them you love them. Mark and I always do. We always end every phone call with those words. Life is precious and can be gone in an instant. Go hug your family and be thankful they are there with you.

WOW! Sounds like my niece in Oregon. She basically was involved in a similar thing. Black ice can be tricky. I’m glad Mark is ok. Praise the Lord he was being watched over.
Tracy, when you mentioned you always say “I Love You” after each phone conversation and before you leave each other it reminded me years ago I heard saying those words you are placing a blessing on that person. And I always say that to my loved ones and to friends, even when I end an e-mail. Have a terrific day and I love you.
