I’ve had a very good couple of days – no major symptoms and NO MIGRAINES!! Praise God!!!! I’m still waiting for my doctor’s office to call me and tell me when they scheduled my neurological appointment. It’s been a week since my visit. Mmmmm??? Honestly, I’m not in a hurry to go to another “ologist” and be poked and prodded; most likely because I’m feeling better at the moment.
I’m seriously looking into changing some of what/how we eat in our home. More whole/real foods and less processed. We don’t eat all processed foods now, of course; but much more than we should and I know that has an impact overall. I’ve ordered Sue Gregg’s Taste & Tell Introductory Cooking Course, it’s a course to help one ease into real foods cooking. I definitely need to ease into it. LOL
I think gradual changes would be best, so as not to shock my family into revolting. But it would seem that I can easily make changes and substitutions that they probably wouldn’t even notice or realize and would be healthier for all of us. It will be interesting to see if this change in eating has any effect on my migraines and overall health in a noticeable difference (i.e., more energy, less migraines, perhaps elimination of my other symptoms?!!!!! Wouldn’t that be an answer to prayer?!!)
My lack of enthusiasm, when it comes to cooking, makes this kind of transition for me hard. This is not an area where I would do my usual “whole hog” self, because it’s not an area that truly peaks my interest and that I enjoy. So I’m struggling here to do what my logical brain is telling me is good and best for my family and my other side that really doesn’t like to think a whole lot about food in general. I eat to live, not live to eat. I would rather not dwell on menu plans, cracking wheat berries, making bread, organic this and that…….. just give me something to eat and I’m good! *sigh* Of course, since my weight loss surgery, I am mindful of what I put in my mouth and what goes into my children’s mouths – but I don’t obsess about it and dwell on it. Rachel Ray’s job is secure. No competition from me, that’s for sure! LOL
My “whole hog” self is also struggling with the equipment and “stuff” apparently many whole/real foods eatin’ folks have. Bosch mixers and assorted attachments, grain mills, then there’s actual grain you need to buy, natural sweeteners and nothing white (no white sugar, flour, etc…). Honestly, my head is spinning and my bank account is looking very, well…. lacking, when I see all that could be needed to do this “right”. So back to struggling with my “Type A” self again. So then I remembered the Sue Gregg cookbooks, found her site and her inexpensive book and some free recipes and they only need a blender!! BINGO!! That I can do! Yahoo!!!!!
So in the meantime, I’ll start saving up for a Bosch mixer, and maybe by the time I get the money together for that, I’ll be well on my way to having us eat better and will be more used to it. I’m much better about change than my hubby – and if I’m struggling, well…. why don’t you pray for Mark too.

Sue Gregg’s cookbooks are great! I have them and have made some great meals! Let me know if you want to see them.
Ooooo – I would love to see them! I have the course coming and have some sample recipes from that – but would love to get the whole set. Do you know of anywhere I could perhaps get them used – as a whole set? I checked ebay and they didn’t have any.
Just when I gave up trying…. your blog let me on to post! LOL
I can tell you from experience, eating whole foods doesn’t have to be as overwhelming as it first seems. Try some of Wardeh’s simple recipes. They have few ingredients and are easy to make. Also, don’t stress over making your own flour, etc. Just buy flour that is as high quality as you can.
If I could tell you one thing that has helped me more than any other with my migraines and health problems it would be to get rid of the white sugar! In addition to molasses and maple syrup, I use something called Agave nectar or syrup. Its just as sweetening as sugar, has no taste, but is all natural, not processed.
Experiment with whole grains like quinoa, millet and couscous. They can be made into really tasty salads.
Best wishes to you! Praying for Mark! LOL
just give me something to eat and I’m good!
Honey, you and me, too!
I have tried to get excited about cooking. I can get so ‘into’ other things, but when it comes to getting into that kitchen, putting on a perky smile (with sparkle on teeth, of course) I am just so not there.
Butchaknow (was that a run-on or what?
) what? Slowwwwwly changing over some of my eating habits over the past 7 years has had so many health benefits that I’m managing. Yes, Rachel Ray can for sure keep her job
but, I’m trying to cut out the white and bring in the whole to make this momma (andfam) a little bit healthier. And, when I do find something that I think Darrell will like, I introduce it casually when he’s home.
Some things he won’t touch with a ten foot pole, but somethings I have been pleasantly surprised he has welcomed with open arms. Er, uh, mouth, I should say.
Just picture your hubby sniffin’ the air when he walks in to your home and you have some new fangled whole food-type recipe cookin’! Oh yeahhh. My hubby loves spaghetti. We found a whole wheat sp. plus au-natural stuff like ‘maters, spices, etc. I thought he would not care for the change – but he absolutely loved it! And, hot dogs! We found some nitrate-free (headache causing ingredient if I ever saw one) hotdogs called Applegate Farms uncured hotdogs. Read more about them at applegatefarms.com We love LOVE love hotdogs and I never thought I would ever find a hot dog (especially not an all-natural one!) that I liked better than good ole’ Oscar Mayer. But, these are better than any hot dog I have ever had.
Okay, here I am wide awake because I had a (ducking) Starbucks Mocha Frappacino.
It was my once every six months or so one. Ha ha! This is why!
Anywho, I am praying for your, Dear Traci. (and for your family) I want you to feel great – every day. (((hugs))), Robin
The Urban Homemaker site sells the sets – that’s where I got mine. If you want to see them, give me a call and maybe I can run them up!
Traci, this is AWESOME! I am so excited for you! If I have one word of advice for you, it is to keep things simple. Simple ingredients. Foods that are in close to the same state as how God made them. Then you don’t have to be overwhelmed with technical this or that. Just food — real food. Sue Gregg is a great place to start. Please keep writing about this journey you’re on so I can see how you’re doing!
Love, Wardeh
Hi Wardeh – I will keep you posted. I have found a site via Robin S.’s blog for wholesale ordering of grains and such; I’m going to try to order from there. So far, I’ve not made a ton of progress, other than getting in the Sue Gregg lesson book.
