My rambling observations on menopause, as one who has lived it for the past almost 6 years.
Menopause….
- sucks the memory right out of your brain. You can’t remember what you had for breakfast, where you left your car keys, or anyone’s birthday. First names? Forget about it.
- sucks the energy out of your body as if someone pulled a drain plug. Naps are now your friend.
- sucks your well honed skills in anything into oblivion. If you used to be able to organize, cook, clean, multi-task – those are distant memories (if you could remember them).
- sucks the drive right out of you: desire to drive, drive to work harder, drive to keep your house spotless, the drive to be perfect primped and yes, even your sex drive. Poof! Gone.
- sucks the calcium from your bones so you now deal with things like Boniva and bone scans
- sucks that you now crave things like chocolate, sweets and carbs and even looking at them causes you to gain 5 lbs.
- sucks your body’s temperature regulating abilities so at any given moment, you could be overcome with your own ‘personal summer’; not bad in winter, doubly sucks in summer.
- sucks the ability to get a full nights sleep from your life. Insomnia definitely sucks.
Yes, there are many things about menopause that suck. There are also some good things (believe it or not); but I can’t remember any of them at the moment. I’m having a ‘personal summer’ and it’s melting the chocolate in my hand, so I best close before I nod off at the keyboard and I wake up and forget where I am and what the point was to this rambling.

Oh my goodness! I am right there having those personal summers with you.
That black cohosh stuff helps a lot…when I can remember to take it.

I lost my keys at Walmart yesterday. They were in my hand while I was searching in a panic. People ask me “Is it hot in here?” I answer “It’s always hot in here to me, even when you are freezing.” LOL
Around what age does menopause hit? I am almost 30 and I am a bit scatterbrained at times .
Hi Lorrie – For most women not until their early 50′s. I believe that’s the ‘average’; of course some go through much sooner or later.
You just look to young for M-P
Hot flashes: I have a fan next to my homeschool table and frequently stick my head next to it. But insomnia is the worst! I am dealing with the insomnia with MP3 player and Bible studies. Thanks for the smile. Post Tweeted.
