Tooth Loss in Moms of Many Children

Well now, here’s some interesting news. Supposedly, the more children you have, the more teeth you’ll lose. This article, For women, more children can mean fewer teeth, suggests that this tooth loss occurs across all socioeconomic levels, and possibly due to the higher incidence of gingivitis during pregnancy, avoiding the dentist because of x-rays and/or women neglecting dental care for lack of money or time.

So listen up moms (especially you quiverful moms), take care of your teeth! Get to the dentist for those twice yearly exams and cleanings. Don’t have dental insurance? I did a quick search and found some affordable dental plans for individuals and families!

No more excuses – get to the dentist (and the kids too!).

Surgery for Hannah & more…

We had the consult today with the ENT for Hannah – and he definitely concurred that she needed her tonsils out and her adenoids too. His staff is going to call the hospital to get some dates together and get back to me in a day or so on when this will all happen. Hopefully before January 28th when Mark has to go back to work. Hannah will be out of school for one week, and will need to take it easy for another week after that. This is an out-patient procedure; but a fairly painful one. :(

Mark, Sam and Emily went to the appointment today as well, and while there, the ENT doc commented on Emily’s persistent cough. The one we’ve been trying to determine the cause of and have treated with oral meds, inhalers and most recently also steroids. Nothing is working. To me, it sounds exactly like an asthma cough. But chest x-rays did not show it to be asthma, according to our PCP; but this ENT said she needs a pulmonary function test because he said it certainly sounded like an asthma cough to him and he stopped in the middle of his exam of Hannah, more than once, to interject further comments on Emily!! Yes, the cough is that noticeable. So I called our PCP to give them the news on Hannah’s surgery and to have them schedule a pulmonary function test for Emily – or refer us to someone who can.

Now to top all this off, the criteria this ENT has for tonsil/adenoid removal – Sam and Emily have also more than met. So I anticipate this summer these two will also having this surgery. But with the need to miss a week of school – I’d like to hold off until summer for them, with the grade level they’re both in. Hannah’s just in Kindergarten, so not as big of a deal.

Add to all the above, we’re all now sick with sore throats, coughs and sinus-y stuff. *sigh*  Calgon – take me away!!
