As I wrote in my article Is Wearing Dresses Only, Legalistic ?, dressing modestly is what God’s word says we are to do. It’s about obedience, and more importantly, it’s about having a heart toward God and wanting to obey Him. Today’s current fashion trends are atrocious and definitely not modest! With low-rider, hip hugger jeans, thong straps sticking out the back and cropped, skin-tight shirts with plunging necklines; there is no way this style could be defined as modest. Yet, this is the exact style of clothing being worn by even those claiming to be Christian! It is truly shocking, and sad; because we are told we can not love the things of this world and still be a Christian.

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world — the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions — is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

I John 2:15-17 (emphasis mine)

The above verse in 1John is very clear: you can’t have your cake and eat it too (to sum it up). You can’t act, talk and dress like the world (read: non-Christians/the unsaved) and still call yourself a Christian! This world we live in is not our real home, we’re not supposed to settle in, get comfortable and ‘do like the Jones’, we are aliens and strangers in this world.

Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.” 1 Peter 2:11-12

Ask yourself this: if you were brought into a court of law, accused of being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you? You had better hope so, if you intend to spend eternity in heaven!

The evidence of you being a Christian isn’t limited to just how you dress, it encompasses every aspect of your life. Living a life sold-out for God, fully and totally devoted to Him and His word is how Christians should be living; by being walking, talking, breathing examples of a Christ-like lifestyle. Examine your life – all aspects and areas of your life – and see if you’re walking the walk.

I happened upon another article along these same lines: Pastor’s Corner: The Way of the World, it’s also a good read and speaks on this very topic. Please, examine your life – and more importantly, your heart and attitude – and make sure that you are right with God and not doing anything that would go against God’s word in your dress, speech and actions. A heart truly turned toward God will want to live according to scripture.

Tracy, I appreciate this article very much. I address this issue fairly often, annoying some ladies I’m afraid. I have a link to pricelesswoman and got to you via it, though some of her links on Modesty are voided. Glad to be aware of your site.

It’s not that difficult to dress modestly without wearing only dresses. Seriously.

How dare you insinate that since you choose to cover every inch of your body with cloth and i choose to display what God gave me in a classy manner that you are more a christian than I. How dare you. I find this article presumptuous and rude.

Robyn: this article did not say wearing dresses only is the only way to be modest. Of course it’s possible to dress modestly wearing pants.

Jessica – you are certainly entitled to your opinion; but I found your comment to be quite rude. It you don’t agree, fine. How you dress is between you and God. I did not say I was ‘more Christian’ than you because I interpret God’s word to read that we are to cover ourselves.

God himself made clothes to cover Adam & Eve (Genesis 3:21). These were tunics to COVER their nakedness; not revealing clothing to ‘display what God gave’ them. There had been displaying it, and because of sin God told them to cover up, and even made them clothes to do so.

It’s God’s rules for how we are to dress: not mine.

Traci, thank you for being salt and light!

“If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me.”
- John 15:18-21
